December 28: A Simple Plan by Scott Smith
December 22 marks this year’s winter solstice, and this month we’ll be reading and discussing a chilling tale to usher in the season. Scott Smith’s 1993 novel A Simple Plan will give you goose bumps as fine as any Old Man Winter can raise!
The story opens on New Year’s Eve in 1987 as two mismatched brothers, Hank and Jacob, make their annual visit to their parents’ grave. Along for the ride are Jacob’s friend Lou and Jacob’s dog. On a lonely rural road, Jacob swerves to avoid a fox and his truck skids to a stop against a snowy embankment.
When the men get out to assess the damage, the dog takes off across the snowy fields. Chasing the dog through shin-deep snow, the men stumble into the woods of a nature preserve and there they spot the plane. Inside the snow-covered, single-engine plane is a long-dead pilot and a duffel bag full of a cool four million dollars.
Hank and Jacob and Lou are sure there’s a way to keep the money for themselves: all it will take is a simple plan.
“No man chooses evil because it is evil; he only mistakes it for happiness, the good he seeks.” – Mary Wollstonecraft
Set in the flat, frozen landscape of Northwestern, Ohio, in January, A Simple Plan will seep into your bones like an icy wind.
