October 31: The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel
The Grandview Library Book Discussion is going back in time!
In 1980, people were grooving to Blondie’s Call Me and Queen’s Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Women were wearing knickers, leg warmers, and big hair. Men were wearing mullets. Everyone was wondering “Who shot J.R?”, and Eddie Murphy made his first appearance on SNL. Fifty-two Americans were being held hostage in Iran, and John Lennon was murdered by Mark David Chapman in front of his home.
In September, the first novel by Jean Auel, The Clan of the Cave Bear, created a publishing sensation, eventually selling more than 45 million copies.
17,032–35,032 Years Ago
Ayla, a Cro-Magnon child, has been orphaned by an earthquake that has killed her entire tribe. Eventually she is found by a group of Neanderthals who grudgingly agree to raise her despite her unusual looks and ideas. While her adoptive mother Iza teaches Ayla to become a medicine woman, Broud, the next leader of the Clan, resents her for her strength and resourcefulness, and uses his position of power to punish her.
